So many pretty things going on….

Passion for flowers - Birmingham Wedding Photographer

A little while ago now I met these lovely ladies. They are a Mother and Daughter combo and run Passion for flowers and The wedding of my dreams.

I instantly not only fell in love with them but also with their products and now recommend them to all my couples.

They specialise in flowers on the one side and decorative items on the other. Basically anything and everything to make your tables look fantastic!

A lot of my Brides ask for ideas and advice on certain things so I hope this post helps some of you with table and flower inspiration. Drop these Ladies an email and they will help you out so much. I’d actually like my house to look like this on a daily basis!!

A Birmingham Bridal Shoot

Birmingham Bridal Shoot
Now and then I get the chance to attend some fantastic meet ups with other Photographers and it’s also a chance to make friends and meet new people which I love. I attended a vintage pin up shoot in Malvern a few months ago and whilst there I met the lovely Waiman yau.

Waiman and I kept in touch and he let me know he was organising a shoot himself and would I like to tag along. Uh, of course I would after I heard the details.

Ali gets Baptised.

A very good friend of mine sends me a message and asks me if I would like to go to her Baptism. Not only that but would I like to photograph it for her……PANIC. It was such a gorgeous day and a tear (or two) was shed by Ali. Here is a sneak peek of her gorgeous day. Love you Lady x

Vintage Styled Photo Shoot

A few weeks ago I attended a photo shoot get together arranged by the lovely Theresa. With the location being Malvern and that only being down the road from me, it was too good to turn down. Coupled with the fact that Theresa had worked very hard to get the best models and suppliers to provide the perfect shooting material!

This turned into a bit of a road trip with a good friend of mine, Ali Lovegrove, after saying she was also going and would I like to travel with her. You will understand why I like being around Ali when I tell you that her first words to me when I got in the car were “where’s the nearest McDonald’s?”

When we got there we headed for the nearest coffee shop to meet up with other Photographers joining in on the day. Everyone was so friendly and lovely and it’s a great way of everyone asking each other questions and making new friends in the industry. Even though it started raining we were all in good spirits and headed across the road to start the shoot.

Here are a few photos from my day….

Daffodil Waves Wedding Albums

The great thing about me now being a full time Wedding Photographer is I have a little bit more time to blog about things that really matter and that my couples actually ask about. Photo albums are one of those things so I have taken some pictures of the range of albums I do at the moment.

The first one is an album from Folio albums and of course, I made sure I matched my colours as close as possible with the leather colour choice ;) . It is a gorgeous hand bound album with a luxury leather cover. The pages have an almost invisible crease down the middle so your images can go right across both pages. I’ll let the photos do the talking with this one.

I am obviously conscious that all my couples have different budgets for their big day, that is why I have two different types of albums at different prices. I have taken photos of this one too so you can see the difference. This is more of a coffee table style album and the crease is down the middle of the pages. I have tried to replicate the look of the Folio one as much as possible so you can see a fair comparison. With the coffee table album there is one great advantage, you don’t need to have a block colour cover like the one shown here. You can actually have an image on the cover so if you had a favourite picture from your day then it would be no problem to wrap that around the cover instead.

What some couples do is buy the Folio one for themselves and then the coffee table book for their Parents. Others buy the coffee table book for themselves also. Everyone is different and have different tastes. I just think it is nice that you have an option.

Oh yes, let’s not forget the mini ones you can get of your photo wall….

Win a Styled Photoshoot

When talking to most of my couples they always have the same issue….saving for the big day. After all, this is a hell of a lot of money you are spending and you want to make it perfect right? I have been there and done this and I promise, it is all worth it in the end.

Now, I may be biased but I feel one of the most important things about your wedding is the memories you have after the day is over and the honeymoon blues start to kick in. Photographs are something you can look at over and over again and relive those memories. That is why I have teamed up with The Bijou Bride and the fab blogger Lou AKA Whimsical Wonderland Weddings to give away a styled photo shoot to one lucky reader.

First dances – Convention or Meaningful Moment?

Today you are in for a treat, with a guest blog from the one and only Amplifive. At the majority of the weddings I attend, the Bride and Groom have a first dance. They are always so lovely to watch and they all vary greatly. I have seen this Group sing a couples first dance song and it was so amazing and tear jerking so who better to chat to you about this subject. Take it away Debs…….

I am so excited for our first dance requests for this year! As expected we get a lot of people asking for the same, classic songs which are all lovely but I go a bit daft when we’re asked for something a bit out of the ordinary. It’s a great challenge and as the band vocal arranger there’s nothing I like better than getting my teeth stuck into something new. And I love to know people’s reasons for choosing a song, it somehow helps in the arranging and performing of the song for that particular couple. You will of course risk having me in floods of tears while trying to sing which isn’t a good look or sound.

First and foremost, don’t panic if you don’t have a special song, just pick something that speaks to you both.

Not every couple has an ‘our song’ which is no surprise really. Our social culture is worlds away from when couples met and fell in love at the local dance hall, while a particular song played out across a crowded room. They tend not to hold an Under The Sea type dance in Karbon or Ministry of Sound. But that doesn’t mean that music isn’t still an important part of a lot of people’s lives. Couples often go to live gigs together and with the advent of extensive movie soundtracks have other associations for the music they listened to while falling in love.

We often get brides and grooms who choose songs because they’re tied up in what they believe to be appropriate. Nonsense I say! Weddings are no longer a matter for tradition. A wedding is nothing if not a reflection of your personalities and the things you share and hold dear. That goes for music too. Never mind “My Mum says it’s not the done thing” or “People might think we’re weird”. If you’ve invited people to your wedding who may judge you harshly based on your music choices then I suggest a little cutting back on the guest list. Never be afraid to ask a band if they can learn your favourite song for you. Any band worth their salt will happily learn one song for your wedding, it would be ridiculous not to. And personally I’d have no hesitation in creating a unique arrangement of a song just for you. That’s what being a musician is all about. There are the odd occasions when a song is just impossible to recreate and there is nothing wrong in having the original played on disc or MP3 player.

So what songs are people asking for at the moment?

It does change year to year but our 5 most popular first dances, the ones that get asked for time and time again, nearly always include the following:

Songbird – Eva Cassidy
Amazed – Lonestar
Have I Told You Lately – Van Morrison
Let’s Stay Together – Al Green
At Last – Etta James

This year however we’ve been asked for some really awesome songs/versions of songs. The very lovely Stephanie Milne, whose wedding I’ve been looking forward to for over a year, has made my two favourite requests so far. This plus the fact that she’s hired us proves she has fabulous taste in music. ;D

Steph’s 1st dance : I Wanna Hold You Hand – The Beatles (BUT the version from the movie Across the Universe which is achingly beautiful!)

Steph’s 2nd dance: Somebody To Love – Queen

I was delighted by her second choice. Queen songs are so much fun to arrange vocals for, the harmonies are so meticulous and simple but incredibly effective.

Other slightly less conventional songs this year include:

Use Somebody – Pixie Lott
Just The Way You Are – Bruno Mars
Sweet Home Alabama – Lynyrd Skynyrd
Feels Like Home – Chantal Kreviazuk (From the film My Sister’s Keeper *sob*)

Over the years I’ve been asked for all manner of songs. My favourites included our own arrangement of Yellow by Coldplay, solo piano with female vocal in a higher key than the original. It changed from a lad’s anthem to an ethereal, heart stopper reminiscent of the likes of Alison Krauss and Shawn Colvin. And also the truly gorgeous Fishing For A Dream by Turin Brakes, a song I was so thrilled to be asked for I may have let out a little squeal!

Maybe some day people will feel comfortable asking for their favourite Calexico song. Or that obscure 60s soul number that was hiding away on the credits of the movie they saw on their first date. Remember? The date where you dropped the popcorn all over the woman in front and he saved the day by staring sternly at the poor kid sitting in the next seat. These are the memories that attach themselves firmly to the songs and the people you love. And these are the songs that should feature at your wedding.

Now, if someone could please request Great Balls Of Fire my life will be complete!

x

Bridal shoot at Highbury Hall

With Highbury Hall in Birmingham (only down the road) and with the opportunity of doing a shoot there, who wouldn’t? I had some amazing suppliers send me some items that we could have fun with and the most gorgeous model willing to try on all the lovely things sent to me. Thank you so much to everyone involved.

The weather wasn’t the best but it didn’t matter one bit because the inside of Highbury Hall is stunning! If you get a chance to go and see it then please do. You won’t be disappointed. Here are some of the shots from the shoot. I really hope you like them as much as we liked doing them…..

Ava-Marie was born….

On the 25th January 2011 at Heartlands Hospital Birmingham, Ava-Marie was born weighing 7lb 13oz.

Last Sunday I had the privilege of being invited into this lovely families home. Knocking on the door I heard the most ferocious guard dog that would lick you to death if confronted. After giving Belle (the dog) loads of fuss and having a lovely cup of tea made by Dad James, Ava-Marie came downstairs with Mum Claire.

She was so Gorgeous and looked very content in Mums arms. After a chat and flicking through albums we thought we would check out Ava-Marie’s modeling skills and decided she had the ‘gift’. Watch out Dad because she’s going to be a heart breaker ;)
